Sportsguards & Mouthguards

Protecting Your Teeth With Mouthguards

When it comes to protecting your mouth, a mouthguard is an essential piece of athletic gear that should be part of an athlete’s standard equipment from an early age.

Mouthguards help buffer an impact or blow that otherwise could cause broken teeth, jaw injuries or cuts to the lip, tongue or face. Mouthguards also may reduce the rate and severity of concussions. An athlete is 60 times more likely to suffer harm to the teeth when not wearing a mouthguard.

Many sports injuries involve intraoral trauma that can be reduced or eliminated by proper use of an appropriate mouthguard.

Sports in which mouthguard protection is recommended include football, boxing, ice hockey, wrestling, field hockey, lacrosse, basketball, baseball, and soccer.

Injury rates of male and female athletes are quite similar and mouthguard protection is recommended for both sexes.

Three categories of mouthguards are available:

1. Stock mouthguards: “one size fits all,” poorest fit, least protection.

2. Mouth formed mouthguards: “boil and bite,” somewhat better fit with some added protection.

3. Custom formed mouthguards: Formed by a dentist, custom adapted to the teeth. Best fit, least bulk, most protection.
